Thyroid conditions

Just yesterday a patient called in regard to a new medical diagnosis of thyroid disease. Today, I see one of the acupuncture newsletters I receive discussing thyroid conditions. Clearly, this seems to be the time to answer the question of whether or not Chinese medicine can be helpful with thyroid disorder.
In short, yes, traditional Chinese medicine with all of its various modalities can be helpful in treating the thyroid. A large difference in approach, while a patient may walk away from a Western medical scene with the label of a thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism based on lab results, in Chinese medicine I would still need to do a full evaluation. In other words, I could have 3 patients come to me with a label of hypothyroidism, but each one may have a slightly different Chinese medical diagnosis. This is how we treat the root of a person's imbalance versus chasing symptoms (the branch). Treatment can consist of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, lifestyle/dietary counseling and recommendations for exercise such as qigong.
